IT’S ABOUT APPEARANCE—OR IS IT?

Body Power defines the social power I have based on my physical appearance and my health, or to be more precise, the perception of my health. Anybody who minimizes the importance of this power lives in a state of major denial. My personal choices may be in full harmony with, or deliberate rebellion against, the Madison Avenue standards of health and beauty. It doesn’t matter, really-wherever I fall on the spectrum of social conformity, the decisions I make about how I present myself and tend to my body will enhance or diminish this power.

Have you ever watched the TV show What Not to Wear on TLC? Each week, hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly take an unsuspecting contestant, gift the person with a $5000 shopping spree, and let her loose in Manhattan’s Soho for a couple of days of shopping. While she (and the occasional “he”) shops for a new wardrobe, she has to follow Stacy and Clinton’s style rules, personalized for each contestant to highlight her physical attributes and desired social image. This culminates in a hair-and-makeup revamp, and then the contestant returns to her hometown to face the friends who “volunteered” her for this makeover.

Cheesy as this all sounds, the personal rewards for each contestant instantly transcend the simple notion of looking better. This is not a plastic surgery show. Contestants still have the same less-than-perfect bodies they had before, they simply display them differently. Yet each subject, down-the-line, seems filled with a profound new sense of confidence after the make-over. This confidence triggers a fresh exuberance for life. And this exuberance is palpable for everyone who meets them. Contestants reclaim the body power they had lost or never known!

That’s the inside job of Body Power. It transcends how attractive I am, how my body is shaped, or how healthy I am. It is in good measure about how attractive I feel, how healthy I feel, and how I feel about the shape of my body. It’s about the relationship I have with my body.
